Case Study

Frostbite - Senior Capstone

Frostbite is a Winter Music Festival held in Denver, Colorado. This festival brings together artists and their fans in support of a global cause. With climate change on the rise, Frostbite is 100% sustainable with all contributing products being recycled, reused, or composted. This event is being held to raise awareness for sustainability and reduce the carbon footprint of a single music festival in hopes that others will follow.

About Frostbite

When beginning this project, I knew I wanted to support a growing problem in the world today but also wanted to incorporate it within something I am passionate about. Festivals offer the ultimate experience for music lovers however, they come at a large cost to the environment. With festivals producing an excessive amount of waste, how are they able to still exist while reducing their overall carbon footprint? The Frostbite Ecomade Music Festival brings together artists and their fans in support of a global cause. With climate change on the rise, Frostbite is 100% sustainable with all contributing products being, or able to be, recycled, reused, or composted. This event is being held to raise awareness for sustainability and reduce the carbon footprint of a single music festival in hopes that others will follow. Through mind mapping, surveys, competitive analysis, and journey mapping, I was able to develop not only the concept of a sustainable festival, but also products that would be available to help support the cause. A reusable water bottle would be provided, free, with the purchase of a ticket to decrease the amount of waste due to cans, bottles, and water cups. The water bottle also allows guest to receive free water fill ups as well as discounted drinks as incentive to bring and use the bottle. A necessity, of course, for festivals is the merchandise to show off after the event. However, the production of creating this clothing is harmful to our ecosystem as well. With the Allmade brand clothing that was used for our merchandise, our shirts are made out of recycled water bottles, recycled polyester, and harvested beech trees making them much more sustainable for our environment. Based off the survey I conducted, I noticed that many people did not have immediate access to garbage cans or even recycling bins. The key element to my project was to create compost and recycling bins that would be places all over the location of the festival making it more convenient for guests to dispose of their trash. These bins are weighted, cardboard boxes in which afterward, they are able to be recycled. These bins also include a list of contents that are able to go in each to help educate the guests and enforce them to put their items in the right bins. With these solutions, I hope that someday all music festivals will become 100% sustainable.
